In the upcoming months, sole supplier of Band-It stainless steel clamping and identification systems distributor Banding & Identifi-cation Solutions Africa (Bisa) will use traditional and social media platforms to target specific industries, such as the food processing industry, the hose market, the mining industry and the utilities and power industries, to expand its market share.

“Exports are increasing and we are deal-ing with all export logistical challenges by appointing distributors in sub-Saharan Africa, which will help us increase our market reach into the rest Africa,” Bisa business man- ager Rosa Remendos tells Engineering News.

“By providing a complete package, using a variety of products that we supply, Bisa offers specific application solutions, including product training from our experienced sales staff and after-sales service, to ensure we meet customer needs in several industries.”

Company Developments

Owing to the high volume of orders the company has received in the past 18 months, Bisa introduced another production machine in August for its manufacturing process, which will assist the company in providing quicker delivery turnaround times, Remendos says.

She highlights that, in keeping with modern trends, Bisa is using social media, such as its Facebook page and Bisa’s official website, to keep customers updated on its latest product offerings, special promotions and useful industry-related news.

Dealing with Challenges

“Bisa has an honest approach to dealing with challenges. Working as a team, we work through any and all industry-related obstacles. “Despite the state of the economy, we have had an acceptable financial year, although not as good as we would have preferred. “However, the company will strive to continue growing by focusing on customer service,” says Remendos.

Further, she notes that Bisa’s main indus-try-related challenge is the shortage of locally produced high-quality stainless steel grades required for strapping.

“We need to keep our customers informed at all times about the availability of products and manufacturing delivery times. “The shortage of the stainless steel grades required for strapping is beyond our control, but by being honest and by keeping our customers in the loop, we try to maintain our high level of service,” she adds.

Remendos explains that the price increases in stainless steel also negatively impact on operating costs, which is why the company emphasises to customers that it manufactures stainless steel strapping and buckles from genuine grade 304 stainless steel, with test certificates available for all items sold.

“Customers are made aware that the quality of our products is worth the price they are paying,” she adds.

Remendos explains that there are about 150 grades of stainless steel, but only about 12 of these grades can be used for stainless steel strapping.

“Strapping is usually made from grade 304, 201 and 316 stainless steel. “All these grades are austenitic in structure, which means they are not magnetic and are ideal for use in electrical applications,” she explains.

Moreover, she notes that the locally manu-factured grade 304 stainless steel is the most popular. It is a general-use stainless steel with high-corrosion resistance and good tensile strength, making it suitable for light- to medium- duty applications in everyday conditions.

“Grade 201, which we import from our UK-based Band-It supplier, with a bright annealed finish, sets the benchmark standard with a combination of high tensile strength and a high-quality appearance,” states Remendos, adding that the grade 201 offers good resis-tance to oxidation and many moderate cor-rosive agents.

Grade 201 strapping applications include hose clamps, pipes, signs and cables, especially where superior strength is required.

Bisa also imports the grade 316 stainless steel, which is used in special applications where superior corrosion resistance is essential, owing to marine and industrial conditions.

Remendos says all Band-It sizes feature fully rounded smooth edges for safety and easy installation and can be formed to virtually any diameter and shape.

“As a certified member of the Southern African Stainless Steel Association (Sassda), we have the right to use the ‘cross and balls’ trademark on our products, packaging and marketing material. “This trademark indicates that we can be trusted, as we have adhered to Sassda’s code of conduct, which encourages professionalism and integrity,” she asserts, adding that, in a fiercely competitive market, the trademark effectively differentiates Bisa’s products from nonmember competitiors.
