Company aims to expand growth in lighting sector

Technology manufacturer Samsung aims to increase its market share in the lighting industry from about 6% by entering the retail market early this year following the successful roll-out of its light-emitting diode (LED) retrofit lamps in February.

Research report provider Strategies Unlimited stated in 2012 that the LED market would steadily expand at an average yearly growth rate of 14% – from about $1.8-billion – accounting for about 15% of the total LED-based product market in 2011, to about $3-billion, accounting for about 26% of the total LED-based product market in 2015.

It is based on this research that Samsung launched its range of LED retrofit lamps, which reduce energy consumption by about 80% – compared with incan- descent and halogen lamps – enabling consumers to save on their electricity bills, states Samsung South Africa divisional head of digital air solutions Michael Mckechnie.

These lamps boast a life of up to 15 years, reducing the need for light bulb purchases and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 90%, he adds.

Samsung first entered the South African lighting industry when it launched its range of LED retrofit lamps last year, although it has been involved in the global lighting industry for nine years.

Mckechnie points out that Samsung has been doing well since it entered the local lighting industry. “Owing to the well- established brand, a level of trust between the company and the industry already exists.”

LED retrofit lamps can be fitted into existing fittings, replacing incandescent, fluorescent and halogen bulbs or less-efficient LED products. They are also cost effective and ecofriendly.

These lamps also have other benefits, such as competitive pricing within the market and comfortable, warm, high-quality lighting, which is ideal for residential areas. They also offer con- sumers a wider choice of brightness, energy consumption and price efficiencies, states Mckechnie.

“It is this diverse offering that addresses the key concerns and behaviours of today’s consumers and will continue to drive the uptake of LED lamps over other lighting solutions.”

LED lamps enable consumers to change the ambiance of their homes and their lifestyles in an eco-conscious and cost-saving way – something that is critical today, where living expenses are continually rising, says Mckechnie.

Samsung’s LED offering includes an entire range of retrofit bulbs and light engines.

Samsung affords every commercial environment the flexibility to light any environment according to its specifications, Mckechnie adds.

The LED engines comprise a small LED chip mounted into a housing, which allows for the design of a specific light fitting, with the engines slotted into the fitting.

Samsung successfully implemented its retrofit LED technologies in South Africa at Melrose Arch and the National Intelligence Agency – two key commercial projects aimed at proving the quality of the LED retrofit technology to the lighting industry, he notes.

Both projects were undertaken in September last year and there are opportunities for the year ahead, Mckechnie concludes.
