Comair staff to embark on strike
JSE-listed airline Comair’s airport ground staff, represented by trade union Uasa, will embark on a strike on Wednesday.
The union and Comair had been engaged in salary negotiations since the beginning of November 2015.
The trade union was requesting a 35% increase over three years, while Comair was offering an unconditional 22.5% increase.
“We pride ourselves in offering fair remuneration and competitive staff benefits. Comair continuously benchmarks its remuneration costs to ensure the manner in which we remunerate our employees reflects the dynamics of the market and the economic environment,” said Comair CEO Erik Venter.
He added that the airline believed in the importance of creating job security, rather than “unsustainable quick wins”.
Comair noted that it would work to limit the impact of the strike on its customers and encouraged them to check in online or at the self-service kiosks at the airports and to drop their bags at the bag drop counter.
