The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) has produced a coffee-table-style book, titled Decades of Engineering Excellence, which offers a colourful glimpse into South Africa’s engineering prowess.

The 200-page hardcover has been compiled and edited by du Toit Grobler, himself a professional engineer, and has been published by Chris van Rensburg Publications.

Grobler says the book is not intended to provide a comprehensive history of engineering and its contribution to South Africa, but rather serves to highlight some of the achievements in the various engineering disciplines.

Decades of Engineering Excellence, he adds, should also serve as a source of information for those considering pursuing engineering as a career, which is why it contains contact details for organisations associated with the profession.

In his foreword, Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi emphasises the impact of engineering on the daily lives of South Africa’s citizens, from the provision of water, power and transport systems, through to communications networks and educational and healthcare facilities.
