Gauteng-based Clyde Bergemann Africa is a leading supplier of ‘on-load’ boiler cleaning, air pollution control and ash handling systems to the power and environmental engineering markets.

The 150-employee company’s product range includes soot blowers, water lance blowers, the patented Dome Valve and the Drycon system, which enables power stations to extract bottom ash in a dry form. This allows for the disposal of the bottom ash without water, reducing polluted water runoff problems.

Clyde Bergemann Africa has more than 30 years’ experience in materials handling solutions for power stations and incinerators. In addition to its mechanical and pneumatic ash handling systems, the company also offers systems and solutions for the injection of various materials, such as coal, sand, limestone and dry sewage sludge.

The R100-million-plus-a-year company, which has been in operation since 1979, reports that its systems are installed in more than 50% of the world’s kraft pulp mills and has extensive experience in developing air systems to maximise recovery boiler capacity and performance.

Clyde Bergemann Africa is 60%-owned by the UK’s Clyde Bergemann Materials Handling, with the remainder of the equity held by local investors, including historically disadvantaged individuals, who own a 20% stake.

The company, which boasts ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:005 and OHSAS 18001:2007 accreditations, is in the process of commissioning robotic welding of pressure vessels at its factory at 4 Industrial road, in Kya Sands, north of Johannesburg. The factory comprises 510 m2 of manufacturing space and 340 m2 of assembly space.
