The City of Johannesburg will spend more than R1-million on dealing with an estimated 4 000 uncovered manholes across the city by December 15.

The city’s manhole cover replacement project was officially launched by Mayor Herman Mashaba on Thursday.

The mayor pointed out that 99 and 104 deaths, respectively, were reported in 2014/15 and 2016/17 as a result of uncovered manholes in the city.

He, meanwhile, also noted that the city has allocated R105-million for the installation and repair of broken down traffic signals throughout the city, while R79-million has been set aside for fixing potholes.

“With these allocations and targets, we are showing that we are committed to enhancing our residents’ quality of life by improving services.

“The decades-long neglect of infrastructure maintenance means there are still substantial infrastructure challenges which require attention,” said Mashaba.
