Businesses and developers have until June 2 to bid for the City of Cape Town’s 25 000 m2 of vacant land in Century City and 3 500 m2 of prime land in Foreshore.

The city, which put the properties up for sale through two tenders last week, was disposing of its vacant land on Century Boulevard, in Century City, and its vacant land, known as Site D on Lower Long street, in Foreshore.

Century City is a 250 ha mixed-use development intersecting the N1 and N7 freeways, about 10 minutes’ drive from the Cape Town central business district. It is home to the Canal Walk Shopping Centre, Ratanga Junction Theme Park, four hotels, restaurants, conference facilities and a gym.

The city’s Century City property, which it bought in 1998 for office accommodation, was no longer required for municipal purposes after the formation of the Unicity and the rationalisation of its holdings.

Further, the city also “in principle” approved the disposal of the Foreshore site, which was zoned for general business, after the demolition of the former power station.

The City of Cape Town envisaged the development of a mixed-use city block for the site that included retail and business activity, such as restaurants, offices or residential development, to support the active use of the adjacent North Wharf Square.
