Networking systems multinational Cisco is training 75 people as part of a pilot project to develop specialist networking skills in South Africa, says Cisco South Africa CTO Vernon Thaver.

The trainees were selected from Cisco’s local partners and clients, and the year-long course aims to develop skilled tech-nology workers to enable the country to transition to a digital way of working.

The participating companies are from the telecommunications, fast-moving consumer goods, logistics and financial services industries, as well as the public sector.

The Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) 360 learning programme is premised on an industry demand-based approach. It will be implemented as a structured, coordinated and managed programme that provides a specialised skill, with a designated mentor supporting the selected candidates throughout the programme, says CCIE 360 education partner company NIL Africa regional director Martin Camp.

“The CCIE 360 Routing and Switching module will serve as a practical programme and supports the continuous development of candidates for future jobs. The CCIE is also an internationally recognised networking certification.”

The second part of this project is the employ-ment of the students after the programme, and there is a significant improvement in job pros- pects after completion of the course.
