Company Announcement - Community members were treated to a day of fun and learning at the Chevron Cape Town Refinery, which opened its doors and hosted its second Community Day, guiding approximately500 visitors on a tour around its refinery situated in Milnerton on Saturday, 12 September 2015. Doug Pottenger, General Manager at the Chevron Cape Town Refinery says, “Transparency and an open dialogue amongst the Refinery’s neighbours is our priority. For this reason we hosted a Community Day at our Refinery to engage and educate community members about the workings of the Refinery. From the feedback we received at the event, a memorable day was had by all.”

The Chevron Refinery Community Day included five tours, each roughly an hour and a half in length. The excursion included a behind the scenes bus tour of the Refinery followed by an exhibition that unpacked various elements pertaining to the Refinery, including its graduate and learnership programmes, as well as its stringent environmental and safety procedures.

Heather Williams, a Table View resident that attended the Community Day says, “It was a really good experience, which opened my eyes to the operations at the Refinery. I did not know the Refinery was so large and well structured. I left the tour feeling satisfied at  how the Refinery operates.”

Furthermore,Bonginkosi Maphongwana, who resides in Du Noon said, “It was an enriching experience. I now have a better understanding regarding the behind the scenes at the Refinery. My key take-outs were the manufacturing of petrol and safety measures in place to address any potential risks for employees and the surrounding communities. I left the Community Day feeling reassured.”

This year, Chevron South Africa’s employees based at head office also joined the Cape Town Refinery Community Day.

The Chevron Cape Town Refinery has been part of the community for the past 49 years and sustains approximately 13 500 direct and indirect jobs in the Western Cape. “We value our role in Cape Town and apart from providing jobs that help drive the local economy, we place the highest priority on the health and safety of our employees and the surrounding communities at all times. If we are safe our community is safe,” concludes Pottenger.
