Data released by cement producer PPC on Wednesday showed a 15.6% surge in South Africa’s year-on-year domestic cement sales to 2.87-million tonnes during the first quarter of 2015.

Sales were, however, lower than the 3.16-million tonnes recorded in the fourth quarter of 2014.

During the three-month period from January to March, selling days, at 63, had ticked up 1.6%, while the reported sales a day recorded a 13.8% year-on-year jump to 45 489 t.

The volumes reported included sales figures from PPC, Lafarge, AfriSam, NPC, Ash Resources, Sephaku Ash, Sephaku Cement and Ulula Ash, and excluded exports and sales to neighbouring countries, as well as imports and sales by other companies.
