Cell C expects to invest R427-million in infrastructure in the Western Cape between June and December.

“Cell C has had ongoing capacity upgrades and new infrastructure roll-outs across the region, which kicked off in earnest in June,” said Cell C CEO Jose dos Santos.

The telecommunications company’s Radio Access Network (RAN) upgrade project was already under way in the Western Cape and would see sites in the area upgraded and modernised by the end of November, in time for the festive season.

The aim of this project was to increase stability and capacity at all sites where new equipment was installed.

Alongside this project, Cell C would continue the roll-out of additional third-generation (3G) and long-term evolution (LTE) sites across the province, increasing both capacity and coverage for its Western Cape users.

“While we had only expected to begin LTE roll-out in this region from 2016, the successful and timeous roll-out of the service in Gauteng has meant that we can push our roll-out in the Western Cape forward,” said Dos Santos.

Cell C would have about 200 LTE sites in the Western Cape by the end of November.

The new site roll-out for both 3G and LTE would continue into 2016 and would be coupled with a project to decrease the effects of radio interference that had become common in the Western Cape. This improved network quality in the area.
