Cell C, South Africa’s third mobile operator, has launched its evolved high-speed packet access (HSPA+) network in Port Elizabeth, the first city where the network is to be rolled out.

The operator was planning to roll out the network, which it had dubbed 4Gs, on a city-by-city basis.

Two broadband packages would be available to customers.

The first package would sell for R1 499 and includes a modem capable of speeds up to 7,2 Mb/s and 2 GB of data a month for 12 months.

The second offering includes a modem capable of speeds up to 21,6 Mb/s and 5 GB of data a month for 12 months.

The operator would also offer out of bundle data at 39c a MB.

Cell C is spending R5-billion on the 4Gs network this year, with billions of rand of further investments to be spent on the roll-out of the network next year.
