South Africa’s third-largest mobile operator Cell C on Thursday confirmed that it had started consultations on the possible retrenchment or redeployment of up to 47 employees.

This emerged after trade union Solidarity announced that its members have received notice of an imminent restructuring process at the company.

“Cell C confirms that it has commenced the process of consultation in respect of possible retrenchments. At this time, and subject to consultation with the affected employees, this process could affect up to 47 employees whether through retrenchment or redeployment,” Cell C responded in an email to Engineering News Online.

The mobile operator was currently determining the selection criteria to follow during the process it aimed to conclude by July, as well as discussing alternative options, including severance packages, Solidarity communications head Marius Croucamp said in a statement.

“According to [a Cell C-issued] letter [to employees] dated April 28, the purpose of the restructuring process is to enhance the company’s effectiveness, streamline its business and avoid the duplication of functions,” he said.

“The process followed is in line with the Labour Relations Act and the company is acting responsibly,” Cell C assured, adding that no further comment would be provided “at this stage”.
