Industry sectors were not making it a structural business case to pursue clean development mechanism (CDM) projects, MD of NuPlanet Clean Energy Anton-Louis Olivier said in April.

Speaking at the third day of the African Biofuels conference, he noted that as energy prices rise, the CDM market would continue to grow.

He added that the CDM and renewable energy markets were changing, saying that the renewable energy feed-in tariff, announced by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa on Tuesday, was just one of the measures that would boost the renewable energy sector.

Meanwhile, carbon-related services provider Promethium Carbon representative Robbie Louw said that the CDM, which was mandated by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, was flawed to some extent.

However, he suggested that the mechanism should be phased out and replaced by a similar mechanism, such as a sectoral crediting mechanism.
