Name of the Project
Capanda green ammonia project.

Location
Angola.

Project Owner/s
Monbos Resources.

Project Description
A technical study has affirmed Capanda’s status as one of the most promising green ammonia projects globally.

The study defines a carbon-free facility, avoiding the use of natural gas or any other carbon-based raw material, through the production of green hydrogen (obtained using water electrolysis) and nitrogen (obtained from the air using an air separation unit) to produce green ammonia, the basis of the final products.

The basis of the study is the use of 200 MW of hydroelectric power, available to Minbos – under its memorandum of understanding with the Angolan network operator RNT – from the Capanda hydroelectric dam to produce green ammonia.

The 200 MW of available power would power 172 MW of average rated equipment capacity and support the production of an estimated 320 t/d of green ammonia. This will produce 730 t/d of low-density ammonium nitrate for use in mining explosives, and an estimated 980 t/d of calcium ammonium nitrate for use in the local fertiliser industry.

The major equipment required to produce ammonia, low-density ammonium nitrate and calcium ammonium nitrate, in addition to fully use the available power, comprises an electrolyser unit, a nitrogen generation unit, an ammonia unit, nitric acid, ammonia nitrate solution, calcium ammonium nitrate and low-density ammonium nitrate finishing units.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
The plant and equipment are expected to require $365-million in capital.

Planned Start/End Date
Not stated.

Latest Developments
The technical study will be used to identify and resolve any gaps ahead of defining the scope of a prefeasibility study, which will be the next step in the project’s development.
