Cabinet has confirmed a number of high-level appointments, including the extension of Science and Technology director-general Dr Phil Mjwara’s contract for another three years from April 1.
Mjwara joined the Department of Science and Technology as director-general in 2006 from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.
Other appointments include new board members for the National Empowerment Fund (NEF), the Airports Company South Africa (Acsa), Air Traffic Navigation Services (ATNS), as well as the Rail Safety Regulator and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).
Thando Mhlambiso was appointed as chairperson of the NEF board, while Dr Jacqueline Williams, who is a trustee, and Sipho Zikode, a Department of Trade and Industry representative, were appointed as members of the board for the remainder of the term ending December 15.
Other appointments to take effect from March 1 included Busisiwe Mabuza as chairperson of the Acsa board, taking over from Wayne van der Vent, who is acting. Skhumbuzo Macozoma, Tryphosa Ramano, Priscilla Mabelane, Elias Masilela and Roshan Morar were appointed as nonexecutive Acsa directors. Mohla Matsaba was appointed as alternative director to Masilela.
Captain Mpho Mamashela was reappointed as chairperson of the ATNS board. Sindi Zilwa, Kgathatso Thlakudi, Nozipho Mgoduso, major-general Fabian Msimang, Nomfanelo Magwentshu, Sipho Mseleku and Hlengiwe Makhathini were appointed as members of the board also with effect from March 1.
Other appointees to take effect on this date were Mitesh Patel as nonexecutive member to the Railway Safety Regulator board and Namhla Mxenge, who was appointed as a nonexecutive member to Prasa's board.
Abel Mawela was appointed as nonexecutive director to the Export Credit Insurance Corporation board for three years.
