Name and Location
Brigg renewable-energy plant project, Lincolnshire, England.

Client
The power plant is being built by BWSC – a collaboration between Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor (BWSC) and PensionDanmark. BWSC will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the plant for 15 years.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of a 40-MW-capacity power plant, which will be primarily fuelled using locally sourced straw. The plant is expected to produce enough energy for 70 000 households and will result in yearly carbon dioxide emission reductions of about 300 000 t.

The plant will be based on energy technology developed in Denmark. A boiler, supplied by high-tech company BWE, will primarily be used for firing straw and will form the core of the plant.

The steam created through the firing of straw will be conducted to a turbine generator, which will produce electricity for households and businesses in the vicinity.

Value
£90-million.

Duration
The plant is expected to be operational from early 2016.

Latest Developments
Alstom has signed a contract with BWSC to design and supply a 45 MW geared reaction steam turbine (GRT) for the Brigg renewable-energy plant, in the UK.

Alstom has optimised the GRT for efficient and flexible power production, covering renewable and traditional fuel types, in addition to industrial applications for process steam. It features a flexible modular concept and a plug-and-play package to reduce installation time.
Key Contracts and Suppliers
