In order to support its extensive range of hydraulic bolt tightening tools, UK hydraulic tools supplier Hi-Force launched Boltright Pro – an innovative bolted joint integrity software programme – in August.

The software is designed to assist engineers by providing accurate bolt load calculations based on key input data, related to each specific bolted joint. Boltright Pro is primarily designed for use in the oil and gas industry, where the safe movement of hydrocarbons in a leak-free environment is absolutely critical; however, it can also assist in many other industries where bolted joints are used.

Hi-Force explains that the user inputs all available data about the joint in question, such as flange size, material and rating, gasket type, bolt size and material grade, lubricant type and operating temperature. Boltright Pro then analyses this data and produces a comprehensive calculation of the required torque or tension to be applied to all of the flange joint bolts in order to achieve a leak-free joint.

In addition, Boltright Pro produces a clear and easy to follow bolt tightening procedure, which includes the correct Hi-Force tool selection, as well as the correct sequence of applying the loads onto the respective flange joint bolts. The procedure also includes the applicable hydraulic pump pressure settings for each stage of the bolt tightening process.

As part of the software joint integrity review process Boltright Pro also displays all the relevant combined stresses within the joint, once the bolt tightening is completed. This includes not only bolt stress but also gasket and flange stress, which ensures that all the stresses within the joint are within acceptable levels. Boltright Pro’s calculations are also aligned with industry standards and the software, thus, ensures that best practice procedures are followed at all times.

The flexibility of the Boltright Pro software enables the user to change any of the input data in order to achieve optimum integrity within every joint. A change of bolt and gasket material, for example, will affect the Boltright Pro software calculations and, subsequently, bolt tightening procedures.

For multiple joint applications, Boltright Pro is also able to compile and store a flange joint register, which can be used to control the issue and return of specific work packs to the bolting crews. Provided input on these is kept updated on the programme, the software can also maintain a live update of the work as it progresses.

During a recent global gathering of Hi-Force employees for their biannual conference, Hi-Force global bolting head Patrick Wright emphasised the need for combining training and practical experience with the built-in accuracy and reliability of Boltright Pro software. Wright also highlighted the need for companies and individuals to take full ownership of asset management in order to avoid potentially catastrophic incidents leading to possible injuries and loss of life, as well as significant damage or loss of assets.

Boltright Pro is available for download across all operating systems under a yearly licence agreement.

Hi-Force’s product range is supplied in 70 countries through a network of over 100 partners and distributors. The company’s offering is available in South Africa through hydraulic solutions provider Hi-Force Hydraulics, mechanical services provider Enermech and industrial equipment supplier Renttech SA.
