BLOWING THE GLOOM AWAY

Rational energy policymaking has been extremely elusive for more than two years, during which an atmosphere of gloom enveloped South Africa’s once-lauded renewables procurement programme. The election of Cyril Ramaphosa as the new president of the African National Congress is expected to breathe some life into the programme. However, any sustained recovery will require policymakers to embrace, rather than resist, the changes under way in the world of electricity.
