JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Black-controlled mining services company Fraser Alexander has won the Glencore group discard and handling services contracts for Tweefontein Boschmans, Impunzi Atcom, Impunzi ATC and Koornfontein coal mines.

The Royal Bafokeng Holdings-owned Fraser Alexander said in a release that the size of the operation enabled the company, headed by CEO Velile Nhlapo, to share resources and employ its in-house designed discard hauler and loader fleets, which made it possible to be highly cost competitive.

The approximate value of the work to Fraser Alexander is expected to total R386-million over the next three years and will involve the employment of 145 people.

During the three-year duration, Fraser Alexander will handle 18.3-million tons of discard and 7.6-million tons of product.

The Gauteng-based company has been delivering outsourced services to the South African coal division of Glencore, the London-, Hong Kong- and now also Johannesburg-listed diversified mining and marketing company, for the last 20 years.

“This long-standing relationship made it possible to create a win-win relationship for both parties,” Fraser Alexander operations manager William Till commented.

Of special importance to Glencore was having a low-risk partner, committed to supporting their safety objectives, with, in this regard, Fraser Alexander BulkMech having recently passed a ten-year milestone at Impunzi without a significant lost-time injury.
