Company Announcement - Leading South African fire door producer, Bitcon Industries, has secured a second contract for the provision of its Rubidor Class B fire doors for Maputo’s new landmark building, the multi-million dollar mixed-use, The Horizon, residential and office tower development in Maputo. The Horizon is located at the Centro de Negocios, adjacent to existing Radisson Blu Hotel on the Maputo foreshore. The impressive 74 000 m² mixed-use development was designed by the South African operations of the architectural firm, DSA Architects International.

It comprises a three storey podium level of parking, incorporating 3 500m² of retail space, an 18-storey,  20 000m² tower with 187 of serviced apartments and a 14-storey, 24 000m² commercial office tower. The development of the one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments will include facilities such as swimming pools and restaurants. The top two floors of the apartment block will consist of luxury penthouse units with spectacular views of the Indian Ocean. Bob Vollmer, director of Bitcon Industries, says the company supplied the Rubidor Class B fire doors to The Horizon’s main contractor, Stefanutti Stocks, the construction industry giant to which Bitcon has frequently supplied fire doors in the past. “The Horizon contract is one of dozens of major export orders for Bitcon fire and security doors recently placed for new developments on the African continent. The company’s export business has grown immensely in the past few years,” Vollmer stated.

Bitcon, a subsidiary of Vitrex, operates from a high-tech plant in Jet Park from where its Rubidor fire doors; Anti-Bandit, Polar and Hippo security doors; transformer and lead-lined doors are produced.Rubidor Class A, B and D hinged fire doors meet the requirements of SANS 1253:2003. The doors’ cores are constructed from a magnesium-oxychloride monolithic-reinforced insulating material with exceptional fire resistance and mechanical strength. Compliance with the national standard is based on successful tests for stability, integrity, insulation and impact resistance. The doors are clad with a variety of finishes including masonite, timber veneers, galvanised sheeting, Formica laminate, and edged with hardwood lipping. Double doors are fitted with rebated meeting stiles.

Bitcon also produces sliding fire doors in the Class A, B and D categories which fulfill the national test standard. The doors are available in single, bi-parting, or double direction format.
