Name of the Project
Biojet fuel production technology development project.

Location
The project will be located at Chubu Electric Power Co’s (Cepco’s) Sin-Nagoya power station, in Aichi prefecture, Japan.

Client
New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation, a consortium comprising Toyo Engineering Corporation, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS), Cepco and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (Jaxa).

Project Description
The project envisages the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions attributable to jet fuel usage.

The project will demonstrate the use of synthetic “neat” biojet fuel production from woody biomass.

Neat biojet fuel is biomass-derived from pure unblended jet fuel based on 100% biomass quality standards.

The demonstration facility will integrate high-performance entrained-flow type gasification technology and Fischer Tropsch synthesis technology.

The facility will process 700 kg/d of woody biomass processing and about 20 ℓ/d of neat biojet fuel production capacity.

Various tests and studies will be conducted through the verification operation of the facility.

Based on the results of the verification and tests, the consortium will also optimise future commercial-scale systems to develop biojet fuel production technology with a high on-stream rate, high efficiency and low capital cost.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Value
Not stated.

Duration
The consortium plans to start the trial operation of the facility in 2019 financial year and conduct verification of the operation in 2020 financial year, including combustion and jet engine testing fuelled by the biojet fuel produced at Jaxa.

Latest Developments
None stated.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
MHPS (atmospheric oxygen/steam-blown entrained-flow-type gasification technology); TOYO (engineering of Fischer Tropsch synthesis technology and synthetic oil upgrading technology); Cepco (facility operation and fuel procurement know-how); and Jaxa (evaluation capability of jet fuel combustion characteristics).

On Budget and on Time?
Too early to state.
