Provider of advanced semi- conductor solutions Renesas Electronics has introduced onto the market a new Silicon Ger-manium:Carbon (SiGe:C) hetero- junction bipolar transistor (HBT), which has a low-noise performance for wireless local area networks (LANs) and similar applications.
The product achieves a noise level of 0.75 dB at 5.8 GHz for improved communication sensitiv- ity and lower power consumption.
The device uses a process that adopts newly developed SiGe:C, which is a carbon HBT that is optimised for microwave appli- cations. It is implemented by combining a process technology that improves device performance with a process that forms electron paths that allow high-speed transport at high density in the semiconductor using hetero- junctions.
It amplifies weak microwave signals that are received wirelessly to an appropriate level. The low-noise amplification means the device can increase communication sensitivity in the end product.
Owing to its ability to reduce signal transmission errors, it can achieve operating power consumption as low as one-quarter of Renesas’ existing products, while maintaining equivalent performance.
The company has developed a new process technology that uses SiGe:C materials to respond to market needs for even lower noise and to provide solutions for the 12 GHz and higher frequencies used in satellite broadcasting.
In previous transistors, it was not possible to avoid a reduction in the collector-emitter withstand voltage in exchange for reducing noise, and this limited the range of applications for which the devices could be used.
In the new device, Renesas has optimised the collector-base profile, making it possible to guarantee a withstand voltage rating of 4.3 V. The range of supply volt- ages can now be increased, enabling stable operation over a frequency range from a few mega- hertz to 14 GHz.
Mass production of this device is scheduled to begin in November at one-million units a month and is expected to reach 50-million units a month together with the company’s existing product range.
