German chemicals giant BASF is one of the confirmed exhibitors at the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (Naacam) Show later this month.

Working within the South African Automotive Masterplan (SAAM) 2035 strategic framework – the extended Automotive Production and Development Programme – BASF’s evolution of new auto technologies will demonstrate how automotive manufacturers can reduce emissions, save weight and improve safety, comfort, and design of their vehicles.

BASF communication and transformation head Linda Brown says five of its divisions will be showcasing the company’s innovative automotive solutions, demonstrating its commitment to the SAAM, while actively contributing to the sustainable development of South Africa’s automotive sector.

BASF’s Five Divisions that are Showcasing

The first division is Mobile Emissions Catalysts, which is the world’s leading supplier of environmental and process catalysts. The group’s emissions catalysts reduce exhaust emissions from petrol- and diesel-powered engines used to power everything from lawn mowers, motorcycles to automobiles, buses, trucks and heavy-duty off-road equipment.

“This technology ensures that vehicle manufacturers worldwide comply with emission regulations – which differ from application to application and from market to market – in a cost-effective manner,” notes Brown.

The second division is Performance Materials with its extensive portfolio of high-performance plastics, foams and plastic additives that can be used to provide companies with tailor-made solutions for the automotive industry. “Plastics are a material of unlimited potential; they are so special because they contribute significantly to our quality of life wherever they are used,” adds Brown.

The third division is Automotive Refinishing, with the refinish paint brands ensuring that the car looks like new again with BASF’s comprehensive range of production systems and services offering a wide variety of solutions for automotive refinishing. “Our specific focus is on eco-efficient waterborne and high-solids coatings with low solvent content,” explains Brown.

The automotive refinish coatings supplied by BASF are approved by most of the leading automotive manufacturers to be used in their authorised body shops. Automobile manufacturers prefer BASF automotive refinish coatings because of their high colour accuracy.

The fourth division is Mineral Oil Additives, which is one of BASF’s largest suppliers of chemicals, to a variety of industries. She further explains that BASF supplies a range of performance chemicals that include fuel additives, refinery chemicals, engine coolants, brake fluids, low, medium and high molar mass polyisobutylene, synthetic lubricants and heat transfer fluids.

Lastly, BASF’s automotive original-equipment manufacturer coatings, or automotive paint, is not delivered as a finished end-product as the paint does not acquire its properties until the various coats have been applied one after the other, under precisely defined conditions.

This year marks BASF’s second time exhibiting at the show. BASF will be exhibiting at stand number 89.
