Barloworld Namibia has been awarded a R250-million engineering, procurement, construction and turnkey (EPCT) contract to build a new power station for NamPower, at Walvis Bay.

The project would be carried out by Barloworld Power, the southern African dealer for Caterpillar power products and the Barloworld group`s specialist turnkey power solutions provider, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

The power station, to be named Anixas, will provide additional power to the fast-growing uranium-mining sector on the Namibian west coast. It will produce 21,5 MW using diesel-powered generator sets.

Construction would start immediately, with the project due for commissioning in December 2010.

“We are proud to be partnering NamPower in strategically increasing its generation capacity, which will underpin economic growth in Namibia,” Barloworld Power executive director Kenny Gaynor said.
