Bakwena N1/N14 road maintenance and upgrade project.

The roads to be maintained and upgraded stretch from Limpopo to the North West, running through South Africa.

Client
Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire.

Project Description
The project will entail the maintenance and upgrade of 385 km of the N1/N14. Bakwena plans to upgrade the following areas in 2018:

the N4, in Groot Marico between Vaalkop and the Swartruggens boundary, will be rebuilt; the N4 westbound carriageway between the R512 up to the Buffelspoort interchange will be resurfaced; and the existing surface will be overlaid with a 40-mm-thick new asphalt surface, and base layer repairs and gravel reconstruction will be undertaken.

The R511 interchange includes the provision of west-facing ramps.

A second carriageway on the N4 between the M17 and the R512 (Brits interchange) will include the extension of structures to accommodate the second carriageway, the realignment of interchange ramps to tie in with the new carriageway and a bridge over the Crocodile river.

The N4 Groot Marico upgrade is estimated at R273-million; the N4 westbound carriageway at R100-million; and the R511 interchange at R55-million.

The N4 between the M17 and the R512 will cost an estimated R582-million to complete.

Duration
The N4 Groot Marico upgrade is expected to be completed by April 2019; the N4 westbound carriageway in October 2018; and the R511 interchange by February 2019.

Construction between the M17 and the R512 on the N4 started in March and is expected to take 36 months to complete.
