Volkswagen of South Africa (VWSA) in January introduced its all-new Polo to the local market.

The previous Polo range was the top-selling passenger brand in South Africa in 2009.

The new Polo is produced at VWSA’s Uitenhage plant, in the Eastern Cape.

VWSA expects to export 55 000
new-generation Polos in 2010,
doubling 2009’s export volume of 28 000 units, of which 19 000 were new Polos.

The new Polo is exported to Japan, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singa-pore, Malta and Cyprus.

The Polo was launched in Europe in May 2009, and was named 2010 European Car of the Year.

The Polo brand was first
introduced in South Africa in 1996.

By the end of 2009, more than
330 000 Polos had been sold
locally.

VWSA has already
invested R3,5-billion to produce the new Polo.

A further R500-million will be invested this year.
