Suzuki Auto South Africa (SA) in August broke through the magical 1 000-unit-a-month sales mark, making it the single biggest sales month for the brand since it was formally established in South Africa in 2008.

Suzuki sold 1 004 units in August, compared with 504 units in the same month last year, which is a 99.2% increase, says Suzuki Auto SA sales and marketing divisional head André Venter.

The Suzuki Swift was the Japanese compact car brand’s top performer in August, with 350 units sold. It was followed by the Celerio, at 177 units, and the Ignis compact sports- utility vehicle, at 144 units.

Suzuki Auto SA has had a blistering sales year to date, and this in a domestic new-vehicle market that is largely treading water.

Sales for the first eight months of the year reached 5 197 units, compared with 3 793 units for the same period last year – a 37% jump.

The company expects to sell around 8 500 new vehicles this year, compared with 5 631 vehicles sold last year.

“We are the fastest-growing brand this year,” says Venter.

“To hit a new record in a tough and declining market is the best confirmation possible that our sales and service support strategy is working. People are looking for affordable and trustworthy vehicles and Suzuki certainly delivers.

“Our performance in South Africa mimics in many ways what is happening with Suzuki around the world. Suzuki’s unwavering commitment to creating compact, value-for-money and exciting cars and commercial vehicles has made the company a specialist in this field and it is paying dividends in many other markets where its sales have boomed.”

While selling 1 000 units a month is a significant milestone for Suzuki Auto SA, it also heralded another internal record in August – 50 000 Suzuki owners in South Africa.

“Selling a total of 50 000 Suzuki vehicles is a significant milestone for a brand that is less than ten years old and a massive achievement for our dedicated Suzuki dealer network and head office staff,” says Venter.
