Millionth SA-made Toyota Corolla rolls off production line
Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has cele- brated the production of the millionth South African-manufactured Corolla.
The vehicle rolled off the production line at the com- pany’s Prospecton plant, in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
The white Toyota Corolla that came off the production line on Wednesday, November 20, crowned six years of produc- tion of the current model line-up, in both left-hand- and right-hand-drive variants.
The current generation Corolla is exported to regions such as Eastern and Western Europe, the Caribbean and Africa.
“It is very symbolic that the Corolla reaches this milestone now,” notes TSAM president and CEO Dr Johan van Zyl. “. . . [as it] heralds the introduction of the new Corolla in 2014”.
The Corolla was first introduced in South Africa in 1975.
The popular sedan has been produced at Toyota’s Prospecton plant since its introduction, while its local content has gradually increased and the range widened to include left-hand-drive models for various export markets.
While the millionth Corolla will find pride of place next to the millionth Hilux in Toyota’s museum at its sales and marketing head office, in Sandton, the Prospecton plant is gearing up to produce the new Corolla.
“The Corolla benefited from our R8-billion invest- ment programme – first announced in 2008 – which modernised the plant and introduced a state-of-the-art paint plant,” says Van Zyl.
“With the new Corolla, we hope to start our next round of investment and look forward to sharing this plan when our first new-generation Corolla models roll off the line.”
TSAM has already started trial production of the 2014 Corolla at its Durban plant.
Full production is scheduled to start in January.
