Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has denied reports that its Durban plant will cease Corolla production to become a plant dedicated to pick-up and sports-utility vehicle production for emerging markets, as reported by Japanese newspapers in late October.
TSAM spokesperson Leo Kok says that these reports are not true, and that TSAM’s Japanese parent company has not yet made a decision on the production location of the new Corolla model.
TSAM’s Durban plant has a produc-tion capacity of 220 000 vehicles a year, and produces the Corolla, Fortuner and Hilux models for the local and European markets.
