Company Announcement - Atlas Copco South Africa once again confirmed its commitment to investing in the future of the country and the continent by reaching out to learners at the GIBS (Gordon Institute of Business Science) Career Expo held on 9th May 2015 in Sandton.

Kgothatso Ntsie, Atlas Copco South Africa’s Corporate Communications Manager, says that this is the third year Atlas Copco has exhibited at this annual event which showcases education and career opportunities to guide the future leaders of the country. The Expo brings together the top 10 academic learners in 11th and 12th grade from over 200 schools across the socio-economic spectrum with educational institutions and corporates. It presents a platform for talented young South African learners to interact with potential employers during their final years of school, discover potential career opportunities and the necessary requirements to facilitate their entry into those fields. Exhibitors include some of the largest South African and international corporates as well as well-known educational institutions.

Atlas Copco is a global company that manufactures and sells equipment to the mining, manufacturing and construction industries around the world and offers a wide range of fantastic international career opportunities in a number of fields, from engineering and accounting to marketing and human resources. “As an organisation we take our employer branding initiatives very seriously,” says Kgothatso who coordinated Atlas Copco’s participation at the Expo, supported by Byrone Thorne, Valerie Giyose and Katlego Ntsie. “We believe that you start at grass roots level to reach future employees. This was an opportunity to inform learners about our company and why they should and can potentially work for us. We had quite a variety of learners who I believe where of a high standard. They showed genuine interest in the whole expo and asked many questions.”

Learners who visited the Atlas Copco stand were in agreement that the Career Expo was indeed a great idea and most helpful. They were impressed by the fact that Atlas Copco offers long term careers and as a global company it presents excellent international career opportunities.

A Grade 11 learner from Leap Science and Maths School who is interested in an accounting career said that Atlas Copco assisted her in learning what subjects are necessary for certain careers. Ivory Park Secondary School Grade 12 learner, Moses Senona, wants to become a mechanical engineer and found his talk with Atlas Copco most interesting. “They offered valuable advice about obtaining a diploma rather than a degree to gain both practical and theoretical experience.” Vutomi Rikhofso who is also a Grade 12 learner at Ivory Park Secondary says, “We need careers in life so that we can succeed and I really enjoyed the session with Atlas Copco to learn more about different career opportunities.”

Byrone chatted to Neal Johns who is in Grade 11 at Edenglen High in Edenvale. “I did not have a set idea on a career as I want to become an entrepreneur but I am also interested in engineering,” explains Neal. “The career day is an excellent idea because it gives us a better understanding; I learnt that I should only establishing my own business once I have my engineering degree.”

Serina Mpharalaka from Sandown High is interested in studying a BSC or BCom Actuarial Science and found the career day a “beautiful experience. Atlas Copco was the icing on cake as we got all the information we need on how to start our career and tie up loose ends.” Qondile Mazibuko, also from Sandown High, wants to study BSC Geology and says she was impressed by Atlas Copco because it is clear that the company is not only there to make money but also to help others and she adds that Atlas Copco also offers great versatility in careers.

Kgothatso was asked to give a presentation at the Career Expo. “It was a perfect opportunity to show learners what we do, where we are present and most importantly, how future employees will benefit from the company. I was expecting to see more exhibitors though to offer more variation for the learners but the day went well and I believe it was a great success for Atlas Copco and all the leaners who visited our stand. We had a lot of interaction and we shared as much valuable information with the learners as possible. These career days are much needed in our country because we noticed with great concern the lack of knowledge that some of these learners have regarding their career choices. We really do hope that they took a lot from the day and I strongly encourage corporates to support this type of initiative.”
