Name and Location
Atlantic Sunrise project, Pennsylvania and Virginia, US.

Client
Williams.

Project Description
The Atlantic Sunrise project is a proposed expansion of the existing Transco natural gas pipeline, which currently transports about 10% of the US’s natural gas.

The project will add about 322 km of new pipe to expand and extend the reach of the existing Transco pipeline to north-eastern Pennsylvania, transporting about 1.7-billion cubic metres of clean, natural gas a day – enough to serve an estimated seven-million homes, in the mid-Atlantic and south-eastern US.

The project will consist of the compression and looping of the Transco Leidy line, in Pennsylvania, along with a greenfield pipeline segment, referred to as the Central Penn Line, connecting the north-eastern Marcellus-producing region to the Transco mainline near Station 195, in south-eastern Pennsylvania.

Additional existing Transco facilities are being added or modified to allow for the bidirectional flowing of the gas.

The preliminary project design includes about 287 km of new greenfield pipe (Central Penn North and Central Penn South), two pipeline loops of about 19 km each (Chapman Loop, Unity Loop), 4 km of existing pipeline replacement, two new compressor facilities in Pennsylvania, and other facility additions or modifications in five states in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Value
The design and construction of the project will require an investment of about $3-billion by Williams and the co-owner of the greenfield portion of the project.

Duration
The pipeline is expected to be in service by 2017.

Latest Developments
Transco has filed an application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission seeking authorisation for its Atlantic Sunrise expansion project.
