Company Announcement - With over 18 years of experience in managing complex environmental site assessments, Arjen Van Schaijk has been promoted to Practice Lead of the Contaminated Site Management Practice of Environmental Resources Management Southern Africa.

ERM is a leading global provider of environmental, health, safety, risk, social consulting and sustainability services. It has been involved in projects across every country in Africa for over 40 years, and in 2003 established a permanent presence in the region to meet the growing needs of its clients. Says Jeremy Soboil, Partner and Managing Director of ERM Sub-Saharan Africa: “Arjen’s particular focus has been on the oil and gas, manufacturing, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. It’s proven to be a huge asset to have his experience which encompasses environmental studies for multinational companies.”

He continues: “Arjen brings strong organisational skills which are necessary to manage what is the largest practice within ERM Southern Africa, and continue its path of growth.” As the CSM Practice Lead, Arjen will lead, manage and develop the team to maintain a strong health & safety culture and support the continued growth of the CSM business in key sectors in Sub-Saharan Africa, working closely with the leaders from other Practices locally and in other geographies in which ERM operates, including Europe, the Middle East and Africa region.

With a clear commitment to his industry, Arjen as an environmental consultant, has thoroughly enjoyed working with clients’ organisations from a variety of industrial sectors and working with professionals on a global basis. “I have been given the opportunity to work with clients as a partner within their organisations and to support them on their challenges. It has also proven to be an industry where my educational background in chemistry could be readily applied, and I’ve been able to work in different geographies around the world.”

Having been based in Singapore and The Netherlands, Arjen joined ERM 10 years ago in China (Shanghai and Western China) to help grow the CSM business. Arjen joined ERM Southern Africa at the beginning of 2014, based in Johannesburg.

Says Arjen: “ERM is a very dynamic organisation that constantly looks for ways to improve business excellence and a company that allows employees to drive their own career. This drive is much in line with my own aspirations and this in turn keeps me motivated.”

Among his key accomplishments, Arjen cites having worked across three continents - Europe, Asia and Africa; and achieving ERM Partnership in 2011. “Working with many teams over the past 18 years and exceeding clients expectations, all without significant safety incidents, has been an important part of my career,” he says, adding that watching other staff members grow their careers and families and see everyone go home safely at the end of the day has been particularly rewarding.
