Applied Mineral Technologies
Established in 2001, Applied Mineral Technologies (Amtec) has grown into a large structural, mechanical, platework and piping (SMPP) services company specialising in the fabrication and construction of materials handling systems and processing plants for clients in the coal, diamonds, iron-ore, tantalite, platinum, gold, gemstone and metal-from-slag sectors.
The company, with over 100 permanent employees – ranging from construction assistants to professional engineers – has successfully completed SMPP projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa, and is currently implementing similar projects in Sierra Leone. Beyond the African continent, Amtec has undertaken construction projects in India, Iran, Italy and Russia.
A spokesperson highlights that Amtec is especially proficient and experienced in brownfield and shutdown construction activities, having successfully undertaken “difficult” projects in the industry.
Adds the spokesperson: “Amtec has also developed the expertise to undertake complex rigging and equipment installation projects, including the planning, logistical management, rigging studies and execution of projects.”
The company’s high-density polyethylene (HDPE) division can undertake both overland and in-plant installations. This capability came to the fore on BHP Billiton’s Middelburg Water Reclamation Project, where 12 km of in-plant HDPE piping and 30 t of pipe support brackets were installed on time and within budget.
Amtec offers its specialised services to larger companies to undertake larger contracts or to undertake technology-specific packages within a larger project.
Cognisant of the high demand for quality, Amtec has in place a quality assurance system that ensures that its quality objectives are achieved. It has also established, documented and implemented its own project management system in accordance with contractual requirements and the relevant parts of the ISO code of practice.
