Anglo American director Khanyisile Kweyama has been appointed CEO of Business Unity South Africa (Busa) for a two-year term starting this month. The natural resources group had agreed to second Kweyama for this period.

“I am proud of the work of my team at Anglo American and that we have accomplished a closer and more trusting relationship with government and our other key stakeholders. “I am now honoured to be taking up the role of CEO of Busa in what is a most critical time for business and government in South Africa to better understand each other and to work towards our common goals,” she said.

She added that, given the right regulatory and fiscal parameters, businesses in South Africa were a force that could be unlocked to make the investments necessary to grow, create jobs and deliver economic upliftment for South Africa.

Anglo American CEO Mark Cutifani thanked Kweyama for her work at the company during what had been “a challenging period for the mining industry”.

“Kweyama has the perfect blend of experience to lead Busa in its mission to serve the interests of the South African business community with a strong, yet fair voice,” he said.

Anglo American said in a statement that it was carrying out a review of the governance structure within its corporate office in South Africa to ensure optimal effectiveness and alignment with its business priorities going forward.
