Amplats in discussions with Sibanye
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Both platinum mining major Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) and gold mining company Sibanye Gold confirmed in separate notices on Thursday that they were in discussions on the sale of Amplats’ Rustenburg platinum operations.
However, JSE-listed Amplats cautioned that the discussions by JSE- and NYSE-listed Sibanye “may or may not lead to a transaction”.
“This is in line with what we have publicly stated, that we continue to pursue both a sale and listing option,” the company stated in a media release, which added that no further detail could be provided “at this stage”.
Sibanye advised its shareholders in a Stock Exchange News Service notice that it might acquire Amplats’ Rustenburg mining and concentrating operations.
If successfully concluded, Sibanye added that the proposed transaction might have an effect on its JSE share price and its American depository receipts on the New York Stock Exchange.
Sibanye advised shareholders to exercise caution when dealing in its shares until a further announcement was made.
