Technology group Altech has signed a broadband technology and distribution agreement for sub-Saharan Africa with US-based CityNet Wireless Incorporated and its global licensing partner CityNet Wireless International, it said on Monday.

"Broadband network delivery systems are now at the centre of all global digital communications,” Altech CEO Craig Venter said.

The deal would allow Altech to “expand into broadband markets in Africa, where cost-efficient use of advanced IP-based wireless networks is the key to meeting massive pent up demand”.

Altech has been “cautious” in its approach to broadband and has spent a number of years doing extensive market and technology research into the broadband area, the company said.

It did not provide financial details of the agreement or of its plans to rollout the broadband service.

Altech shares were flat on Monday, trading 0,01% up for the day, at R68,00 a share, by 11:42.
