Goldwind has signed as a gold sponsor for Windaba the wind industry’s leading conference – meaning that now most of the turbine manufacturers operating in South Africa have gone for gold. Enercon, Nordex, Vestas and Siemens have also taken up the premium sponsorship option.

Windaba also welcomes two new Silver sponsors to the show. Developer and relative newcomer to the market Enel Green Power has firmly established their long-term interest in the market whilst the South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC) is committed to the sustainability of the South African wind industry.

The news came in the same week that the request for proposals was issued for the expedited procurement of 1800 megawatts by Energy Minister under the  Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).

Mason Qin, Business Development Manager at Goldwind Africa said: “As a leading comprehensive wind energy solutions in the world, Goldwind regards South Africa as one of our own core markets and is committed to sustainable development of South Africa wind sector for a long time. Windaba provides Goldwind a good opportunity and platform to share our core values not only for the good quality product of renewable energy but also for a better green life. Goldwind is open to cooperate with anyone who is interested to help South Africa people build up a better life and brighter future.”

The ongoing sense of optimism in the industry is being reflected in an acute interest in Windaba 2015, as potential exhibitors, sponsors and delegates realise that the South African wind industry is flourishing and ripe for investment and development.

The call for abstracts for the conference sessions is now out and those interested in speaking should submit their papers for consideration before 14 August. More details on subjects and how to complete submissions can be found here: http://www.windaba.co.za/conference/call-for-abstracts

Johan Van den Berg, CEO of SAWEA stresses that South Africa is now a leading market internationally: “It’s recognised widely now that we’re one of the three most vibrant markets on the globe…”, he says, “…and this is reflected in the quality of sponsors Windaba is attracting.”

The Minister of Energy has signalled her commitment to expand allocated capacity for renewable energy across all technogies by an additional 6.3 GigaWatt amounting to an approximated 12% of the country’s installed capacity. The wind industry has responded with renewed vigour, with developers exploring new potential projects and preparing to re-submit bid-ready projects for the expedited Round of 1800MW and manufacturers making plans to set up operations locally now there is more certainty in the market.

Windaba is hosted by South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) in partnership with the Global Wind Energy Council (“GWEC”). The conference will take place from 4-5 November 2015 at the Cape Town International Conference Centre.

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Powering the Winds of Change’ and reflects the industry’s conviction that wind energy can fill South Africa’s current energy gap with low cost, clean electricity which can be brought on grid within a relatively short time frame.

“Wind power is coming just at the right time”, explains Van den Berg, SAWEA’s. “There’s a lot of it ready to be built immediately. Government is recognising this and has now communicated a vision that is remarkable for its courage and perspicacity. We expect our industry to continue its very fast growth, while continuing to deliver on the social compact with government. Jobs and rural development, industrialisation and enterprise development are aspects as important as electrons on the grid. We’re in this together, and we’re starting to get it right.”

The flagship conference attracts wind industry professional from all over the world, with more than 500 delegates attending in 2014. Another line-up of impressive speakers and government representatives is expected again this year.
