Al Ghubrah independent water project (IWP), Muscat, Oman.

Client
Muscat Desalination Company (MCDC), in which Malakoff Corporation Berhad owns a 45% share, Sumitomo Corporation 45% and Cadagua 10%.

Project Description
The IWP will supply 191 000 m³/d of drinking water over 20 years to 800 000 people in the area. Configuration of the plant includes submerged seawater intake and outfall, dissolved air flotation, dual media filtration, cartridge filtration, double pass reverse osmosis, remineralisation through carbon dioxide and lime dosing, fluoridation and chlorination. Power for the plant will be drawn from the national grid.

Value
The project will cost an estimated $306-million.

MCDC has obtained financing from the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.

Duration
The project will be completed by October 2014.

Latest Developments
The MCDC recently closed a deal with three banking institutions to finance the IWP.
