The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $228-million loan to Kenya’s government to rehabilitate a 172 km road linking the towns of Isebania and Ahero, near Lake Victoria.

The road formed part of the Sirari Corridor, a major trade and transit route linking Tanzania, Kenya and South Sudan.

The rehabilitation of the road would facilitate trade between Kenya and Tanzania, while accelerating the socioeconomic development of the regions along the road, benefiting nearly two-million people.

The upgrade was expected to reduce travel time, as well as result in lower transport costs.

The construction of 77 km of secondary roads would also enable local producers to get their products to consumption centres.

Further, to strengthen public transport, three bus stations would also be built along the route.
