Minister's adviser proffers recommendations to tackle energy crisis

There are several areas that must be prioritised to tackle the country’s energy crisis, Electricity Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa’s adviser Silas Zimu emphasised on November 22, during the South African National Energy Development Institute’s (SANEDI) first yearly energy conference.

He emphasised the importance of maintaining State-owned utility Eskom’s current assets, with funds having been requested from the National Treasury to undertake this.

Another priority was to expand the distribution and transmission grid, particularly in the Cape provinces, where most solar and wind power projects were being built. He noted, though, that Eskom could not undertake this alone.

Zimu averred that everything that could be taken off the grid should be, and new technology should be implemented where feasible.

He said it was imperative that more be done to bolster the country’s energy capacity, given that access to electricity was enshrined in the Constitution, and that not enough was done to increase the installed gigawatt capacity in the last three decades.

He emphasised that there was a lot of planning to improve energy supply in South Africa, but that implementation of those plans had to be expedited.

SANEDI head of the energy secretariat in the CEO office Professor Sampson Mamphweli, meanwhile, highlighted some of the programmes SANEDI and other stakeholders were undertaking in the country in terms of developing a green hydrogen sector. This included work on the development of hydrogen fuel cell systems and prototypes.

Work is also being undertaken in battery energy storage, encompassing the entire value chain from the mining of the requisite minerals to the development of battery packs.
