Name and Location
Adams and Bellatrix solar power projects, Western Cape, South Africa.

Client
The projects are being sponsored by the Aurora Power Group.

SOLA Future Energy, a locally owned solar photovoltaic engineering and construction firm, will design, build and operate the plant.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of the 5.8 MW Adams and 5.8 MW Bellatrix solar projects. Each project will generate about 190-million carbon-free kilowatt hours over the life of the plant, enough to power 1 000 middle-income households.

The projects were the first to be awarded under the Department of Energy’s Small Projects Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme in October this year. Along with a cap on project size of 5 MW, it also requires that 60% of the ownership of the projects be in local hands and 15% be owned by small- to medium-sized business enterprises.

Value
The projects will cost an estimated R250-million to build.

The Industrial Development Corporation and local black-owned company Mergence Investment Managers have signed a term sheet to provide debt for the project company.

Duration
The project will start construction in mid-2016.
