Automation technology group ABB South Africa has delivered its largest 132 kV high-voltage gas insulated switchgear (GIS) board to City Power's new Sebenza intake substation, as part of a multimillion rand order.

The new 1 000 MVA Sebenza intake substation near Kempton Park promised to strengthen City Power’s distribution network growth.

ABB’s scope of supply included the design, manufacture, testing, supply, delivery, installation and commissioning of 132 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), 400 kV circuit breakers, 275 kV circuit breakers and surge arresters, 132 kV circuit breakers, 88 kV surge arresters and point-of-wave relays.

The 132 kV GIS board, comprising 38 bays, was the largest high-voltage board ABB had supplied in Africa.

ABB was awarded the high voltage switchgear order by engineering procurement and construction contractor Consolidated Power Projects (CONCO),  appointed by City Power.

PSW Consulting Engineers provided consulting engineering services for the project to ensure compliance to specifications.

The order for the switchgear was placed at the end of 2014 and the products were delivered in November 2015. Installation and commissioning began in March and commissioning was planned for completion at the end of September.

ABB was responsible for the supervision of all installation and commissioning, while South African-based company Switec was responsible for the installation of the 132 kV GIS, under ABB’s supervision, as a part of the contract.
