DCD Marine Cape Town  (0.08 MB)

As one of the most established and experienced oil and gas upstream service providers in South Africa, DCD Marine Cape Town has earned its reputation as a safe, reliable and internationally competitive shipyard. Since its inception in 1903, the company has worked hard to achieve its status in the global shipping world, which has been founded largely on stringent safety and quality compliance, and a commitment to providing the best training possible for its workforce.

“In serving the oil and gas industry, it is critical that we comply to international SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality) regulations and standards. Our safety records compare favourably with other top class shipyards around the world,” says Gerry Klos, General Manager of DCD Marine Cape Town. DCD Marine Cape Town is fully certified with the Lloyds ISO 9001:2008 quality management system, complemented by its Lloyds OHSAS 18001:2007 accreditation.  Last year, the company attained its third accreditation with Lloyds, the ISO 14001: 2004 accreditation, which relates to environmental management.  Highly relevant in the marine and shipping world, the 14001 environmental management system includes a commitment to preventing pollution and a continual improvement in overall environmental performance, as well as compliance to international regulatory requirements.

In addition DCD Marine Cape Town also acquired the ISO 3834 Welding Quality certification from Lloyds late last year. “We take our responsibility to the environment very seriously,” comments Klos. “It goes hand-in-hand with our responsibility to our clients, who entrust their highly valuable assets to us. Based on past performance, we enjoy a lot of repeat business,” he adds. DCD Marine Cape Town provides turnkey project management solutions to the marine and upstream oil and gas sector from its facilities in Cape Town, but can also operate from remote sites and offshore. Services include repairs and upgrades to semi-submersible drilling rigs and drill ships, dry dockings as well as subsea structure fabrication.

“The turnkey aspect to our business means that we manage a project end-to-end, ensuring on-time completion which is critical to our clients. Our capacity to offer a complete solution is based not only on our experience in the industry, but also on the calibre of our workforce.  It is vitally important to offer a reliable and consistent service, and a large part of that is based on a solid training programme.” With a particular focus on welding training, DCD Marine Cape Town has our own in-house training centre with an annual intake of 16 apprentices. The programme, fully MERSETA accredited, is instrumental not only in ensuring a highly skilled workforce within DCD Marine Cape Town, but in supplying the industry at large.

“Due to a general shortage of skills in South Africa and even internationally, training is pivotal to our success as a company going forward,” comments Klos.  He adds that their stringent quality standards extend to the sub-contracted work within DCD Marine Cape Town’s scope of work. “Our sub-contractors are involved in the project planning from day one, and are fully integrated into our operations in general – this ensures control when it comes to quality output and successful project completion,” says Klos. “As a projects-driven organisation we have to strive for continual improvement in order to compete successfully in the global shipping environment.  There is a lot at stake for the client when it comes to managing a large oil and gas project, but in adhering to the strictest international standards, and maintaining a highly-skilled workforce, we can assure our clients of a world class service,” he concludes.
