7/17
It is possible that July 17, 2014, will go down in history as one of the most horrific and miserable day of the twenty-first century. Besides the outrageous shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine, it was also the day that Israel decided to move ground forces into Gaza and 90 people were killed in a Syrian gasfield attack. On a far less traumatic, albeit locally significant, note, it was also the day that South Africa officially began raising interest rates.
