Twelve candidates have been shortlisted to fill the five now vacant councillor positions at the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa).

The Portfolio Committee on Communications on Wednesday announced that the interviews of Diratsagae Maoke, Keabetswe Modimoeng, Lance Rothschild, Lumko Mtimde, Paris Mashile, Peter Hlapolosa, Peter Zimri, Sello Molefe, Thamsanqa Ntenteni, Yengwayo Kutta, Botlenyana Mokhele and Dimakatso Qocha would be tentatively undertaken on May 25.

“The Icasa council requires competent and qualified individuals who will be able to develop policies, regulate and govern the broadcasting and telecommunications sector in the public interest,” committee chairperson Joyce Moloi-Moropa explained, adding that the prospective candidates were suitable and “reflected a balanced generation mix and racial diversity”.

This followed the expiry of the office terms of councillors William Currie and Joseph Lebooa at the end of September 2014 and that of William Stucke and Ntombizodwa Ndhlovu in October 2014. Dr Marcia Socikwa resigned in January this year.
