Name and Location
Olkaria geothermal power project, Kenya.

Client
Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).

Project Description
The project involves the expansion of the Olkaria geothermal power plant, as well as a new installation for the Olkaria IV geothermal power plant. The geothermal power-generating project will be built in the Olkaria district, which is located about 100 km north-west of Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi, and will have a capacity of 280 MW.

Four 70 MW power-generating plants, steam-gathering systems, substations, transmission lines and other infrastructure will be installed.

This geothermal power generation project will be the largest in Kenya, comprising 25% of the country’s overall power-generating capacity. The country has potential to produce 7 000 MW and is targeting production of at least 5 000 MW of geothermal power by 2030.

Value
$1.2-billion.

Duration
The plant is scheduled to be operational in 2014.

Latest Developments
SPX Corporation has been awarded the contract to supply four advanced direct contact condensers (ADCC’s) to what will eventually be the largest geothermal power plant ever constructed in Kenya.

The company has been contracted by Hyundai Engineering of Korea, the full turnkey contractor for the plant, to supply four Toshiba 70 MW steam turbines.

Designed mainly for geothermal power plants, the ADCC technology provides enhanced performance characteristics including low liquid/vapour side pressure drop, high thermal efficiency, minimal degradation by noncondensibles, low susceptibility to fouling and corrosion and prediction of absorption of noncondensibles.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
The Kenya government, the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Investment Bank, the World Bank, KfW, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and KenGen (project finance); Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM), Shengli Oilfields Highland Petroleum Equipment Company, or Sohpec (design, engineering, construction and project management); Toyota Tsusho and Hyundai Engineering & Construction (full turnkey supplier); Toshiba (supply of steam turbine engine generator) and SPC Corporation (ADCC).

On Budget and on Time?
Not stated.
